Nothing here happened all at once. These are the days when I noticed that something had shifted.
One page counts
I put a book on the breakfast table before going to bed. In the morning it was there before the phone was, which made the choice unusually easy. I read three pages about a garden I will never visit. The toast got cold. I had expected this habit to make me a more impressive reader, but the useful part was simply beginning the day inside someone else’s careful sentences.
The loop got longer
My evening walk used to stop at the corner. Tonight I carried on towards the water because the light was still good and I wanted to see the reflection of a red boat. I came home through a different street. The route had grown without becoming a goal. That felt like a small discovery: a habit can make space for an unplanned pleasure instead of taking up all the space itself.
A thinner notebook
I removed the unused tracking pages from my ring binder. There were boxes for things I no longer cared about and boxes I had apparently invented because I enjoyed drawing boxes. The notebook is lighter now. I kept the reading list, the walk notes, and a page of dinners worth making again. The empty space looks welcoming. Return to this year’s starting point or read the story behind the notebook.
