A little, each day.Eva Calder · Rotterdam

Hello from the kitchen table.

I’m Eva Calder. This is where I put the thoughts that are too small for a grand announcement and too useful to lose.

I live in Rotterdam with a tall bookcase, a small kitchen, and a chair that travels between the two. My work involves arranging other people’s schedules, so I am naturally suspicious of making my own life into a perfect schedule too. I like a plan with a little breathing room. I also like second-hand essay collections, thick socks, and knowing which drawer the scissors are in.

Why give a year a website?

Paper notebooks are good companions, but I tend to write in shorthand. A sentence such as “boat, Tuesday, better” means something for about a week. Writing a few complete entries makes me ask what I actually want to remember. Usually it is not the completed task. It is the moment around it: the quiet table, the extra turning, the feeling of putting down an unnecessary rule.

I am not trying to turn daily life into a method. The habits described here suit an imagined person in a particular flat, with particular mornings. They are not advice about health or productivity. I enjoy the specificity of other people’s routines, and these pages are written in that same curious, unhurried spirit.

What stays

Eva is a fictional notebook keeper, created for this small personal site. The entries give her year three distinct moments; the home page holds the thread between them. What stays consistent is a preference for modest, repeatable acts and honest descriptions. If a day does not fit the plan, it still gets to be a day worth noticing.

On the table today: a pencil, a short reading list, and a cup on a coaster that used to be a tile.
